Thrissur is situated in south western India 10.52° N 76.21° E and is in the central part of Kerala state, India. Thrissur is at sea level and spans an area of about 66.15 km˛. The center of the city is the Vadakkumnathan temple located on a small hillock. The city enjoys a tropical climate, the monsoons start in June. The months of April-May can get pretty humid which is also one of the best time to visit the city for the famed Thrissur Pooram. The best weather is from October to February.

The city and the area around it have a number of museums, art schools, and institutes, which are dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich cultural traditions of Kerala.The city holds annual eight day festival called Thrissur Pooram during which brilliantly caparisoned elephants lead processions. Followers representing the Thiruvambadi temple on one hand and the Paramekkavu temple on the other hand celebrate the Pooram. Elaborate processions from both these temples start off amidst much fanfare through the streets of Thrissur.

Jubilee Mission Medical College and Research Institute Thrissur, a charitable organization under the Archdiocese of Trichur established in the year 1952. The hospital registered under the charitable Organization Welfare Act had a steady growth ever since it was established. 

Govt. Medical College

Situated 14 km from Thrissur town , this college nestles itself among the greenery of M.G. Kavu. The sprawling new building looms large and majestic in sharp contrast to the wilderness around.


 

Amala Medical College

Amala Cancer Hospital and Research Centre was established in 1978 as a non-profit, charitable institution aimed at treatment and management of Cancer in Central Kerala, India.

 

Kerala Agricultural University

The Kerala Agricultural University came into existence on 24 February 1971. The university has 10 constituent colleges, six Regional Agricultural Research Stations, 26 Research Stations, three Centres of Advanced Studies, the Central Training Institute, the Communication Centre, and five Krishi Vigyan Kendras.

 

Veterinary College

College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy came into existence in 1955 as Government Veterinary College; later renamed as Kerala Veterinary College and Research Institute.
 

Govt. Engineering College

GEC has been rated consistently among the top technical institutes in South India, with students being admitted purely on the basis of merit. The institute is well networked with the industry and it has been helping the industry to grow through focused training and consultancy programmes.

 

IES College of Engineering

Vidya Academy of Science and Technology

Started in the academic year 2003-2004, VAST is ideally located in the sylvan surroundings of a 30 acre plot half-way between the temple town of Guruvayoor and Thrissur, the esteemed aesthetic centre of Kerala.

 


Jyothi Engineering College

Jyothi Engineering College incorporates top class infrastructure with two lakh Sq. Feet of build up area. Sree Kerala Varma College

Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur is now in its post-golden jubilee period. The college was started on the eve of Indian Independence on August 11th 1947 Its first affiliation was as a college in Madras University in 1972 it celebrated its Silver Jubilee...in 1997.

 

St.Thomas College

This college is located in the temple town of Thrissur, Kerala State, Republic of India. Founded by a priest(Fr.Medleycott) in the early 20th Century this college played a very important role in the development of Kerala.

PLACES IN THRISSUR
 

Vadakkunathan Temple

No visitor to Thrissur can miss the Vadakkunnathan temple, "one of the most unique, ancient and important" of the sacred shrines of Kerala. It stands on a beautiful hillock at the center of Thrissur overlooking the town.

 

Our Lady of Dolours Basilica Church  (Puthan Pally)

The Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours, one of the biggest and tallest churches in India, is centrally situated at Thrissur. Spread over an area of 25000 sq ft, this church was constructed in 1940 with the blessings of Maharaja of Cochin, His Excellency Rama Varma

 

Lourdes Church 

Thrissur has a number of churches and the Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral is the most famous amongst them. The building of this church is impressive and worth visiting. The large and impressive Lourdes Church has an interesting underground shrine.

 

Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple 

Situated 33km north of Thrissur, Guruvayoor is one of the most sacred and important pilgrim centers of Kerala. Its main attraction is the Sree Krishna temple known as "Guruvayoor Ambalam". This historic temple is shrouded in mystery. The festival in this temple is held in Feb/march which continuous for 10 days. The festivities start with an elephant procession and performances of Krishnattam dances.
 

Kerala Sahitya Akademi

The Kerala Sahitya Academy was established on August 15, 1956. It aims at the development of Malayalam Language and Literature and works in co-operation with the Kerala Sahitya Academy in New Delhi. There is a good library attached to the Academy consisting of two sections - the General Section and the Research section.
 


Kerala Lalitha Kala Akademi

This was established in 1962, the aim of the Academy is to promote the sculpture, painting and visual arts.

 


Sakthan Palace & Stadium 


Also known as Palace Thoppu. The campus covers an area of 6 acres. Here you can see 3 shavakudeerams (tombs) including that of the renowned Shakthan Thampuran

 


Kerala Kalamandalam 


Kerala Kalamandalam at Cheruthuruthy was founded in 1930 by Mahakavi Vallathol. Its main objective is to revive, preserve and develop the ancient and traditional art form of Kerala particularly the Kathakali.
 

Kerala State Museum and Zoo, Thrissur

This small museum contains rare exhibits of sculpture, religious idols, Kathakali figures, traditional jewellery of Kerala and a delightful collection of traditional lamps. It is situated near the Art Museum. The zoo contains 13.5 acres of land with cool green, flowered area and there resides a variety of fauna such as the endangered lion, tailed macaque, tiger, lion, sloth bear, several species of deer and many birds.
 
 

Kodungallur Cheraman Mosque (India's First Mosque)  

This is the first Mosque in India situated in Methala, Kodungallur, hardly 20 kms from the Irinjalakkuda railway station.
 

Vadanappilly Beach

Thrissur has some of the finest beaches of India. Thrissur coast is lined with sandy beaches, rocky promontories and coconut palms. A coast unrivalled in sheer scenic beauty. Those who seek peace and sun, these tranquil, secluded, palm-fringed beaches are the right options. Whereas, Vadanappilly is a virgin beach which is just beginning to catch up. So natural and fascinating.
 

Peechi Dam

23 Kms, away from Trichur, the Peechy dam is a beautiful picnic spot. It has boating facilities through the reservoir. It is surrounded by tea and eucalyptus. There are many occasions which can see the elephants and wild dogs in the forest. The prime purpose of the reservoir is to provide Thrissur's irrigation and drinking water supply. There is a park information centre.
 

Athirappilly Vazhachal Waterfalls

Athirapally is 63 km and Vazhachal 68 km from Thrissur. East of Chalakudy, near the entrance of the Sholayar forest ranges are the beautiful waterfalls of Athirapally and Vazhachal, 5 kms apart. Athirappally and Vazhachal, the two scenic and popular waterfalls on the edge of the Sholayar forest ranges are just 5 km apart. Both the waterfalls, their cool, misty waters cascading down in the backdrop of thick green forest and rocky terrain, are a scintillating experience to visitors.
 

Vazhani Dam

The catchments of the Peechi-Vazhani dam, the sanctuary is known for the ecological sensitiveness of the Elenjikuthu waterfalls, and wild animals. The sanctuary is part of the Palapilli - Nelliyampathy forests. Boating, bird watching and trekking are permitted.
